1. SURFACTANT THERAPY IN NEONATAL CARE [Review Article]
Dr. Yatin Verma, MBBS, MD
Introduction: Avery and Mead in 1959, commented on the deficiency of a surface active material in the alveolar linings of the lungs of preterm babies with Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). This surface active material was later termed as Surfactant, which is a type of in vivo produced, foamy, fatty liquid that prevents the alveolar sacs from completely collapsing at the end of expiration, thereby reducing the initial momentum required for next inspiratory breath and hence work of breathing. Surfactant usually starts making its appearance in the fetus lung at about 24 weeks of gestation and thereafter gradually increases to its full extent by term gestation i.e. 37 weeks.
2. ROLE OF SUCROSE AND BREAST FEEDING FOR ANALGESIA IN NEWBORN INFANT UNDERGOING PAINFUL PROCEDURE-A COMPARATIVE STUDY [Research Article]
Dr. Braja Kishore Behera, Dr.Rishav Raj
Introduction: Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage. It is the basic right of every individual, irrespective of age or size to have alleviation of pain. Pain in newborn is an ubiquitous phenomenon. All newborns will experience iatrogenic pain in the first days of life, commencing with vitamin–K injection, sampling and metabolic screening. Pain may worsen already compromised physiological states like hypoxia, hypercarbia, acidosis, hyperglycemia or respiratory distress.
3. ESSENTIALS OF ZINC IN PAEDIATRIC DIARRHOEA [Review Article]
Dr. Rishav Raj
Abstract: Indeed zinc has played pivotal role in the treatment of diarrhea in children. It has been studied that zinc along with ORS has reduced the duration and diarrhoeal episode for upto 3 months. As per WHO daily requirement of zinc is 20mg for 10-14 days for children with acute diarrhea, 10mg per day for infants under 6months. It has been observed that poor sanitation & lack of safe water in many parts of the world has led to the death by causing diarrhoea. In fact WHO &UNICEF has recommended zinc & ORS for effective management of diarrhea. Zinc treatment is inexpensive, simple, and cheap for cure of diarrhea.
4. PATWARDHAN’S TECHNIQUE: IT’S IMPACT ON MATERNAL AND FETAL OUTCOME [Research Article]
Dr Mitali Mahapatra
Abstract: In Patwardhan’s method of delivery in obstructed labour, the incision over lower uterine segment is made at the level of the anterior shoulder of the baby as the head is deeply impacted. Anterior shoulder is then delivered along with the anterior arm by hooking a finger in the elbow if required posterior shoulder is rotated forward and is similarly delivered. The trunk, breech and the lower limbs are successively delivered by traction on arms aided by fundal procedure.
